Sins of the Fallen Page 13
I shook my head. “Maybe another time. I’m kinda tired.”
“You’re right. Do you think—maybe Kim would rather do this some other time too. You must all be tired.”
“She’ll be fine, mom. It’ll be good for Kim. She hasn’t had anything normal in her life in years. She needs this.”
“I should get going,” said Hunter.
“Oh, right. I’ll take you home,” I said.
“I can take him home if you want, Kay,” dad offered.
“No, I will. I’ll be back in a bit.”
I grabbed the keys to my R8 and Hunter followed me out. Ethan was outside and said he was going to stay back and watch out for Kim. He looked so sad. We’d have to figure something out soon about him seeing Jennifer again.
I missed driving that car so much! I couldn’t say the same about LA traffic though.
Dropping Hunter off at his house was tough. I had grown so used to having him by my side all the time.
“Do you want me to go in with you?” I asked.
He shook his head. “Knowing my mom, she’s probably passed out drunk. I’d rather you not have to see that.” He seemed sad and distant. “I’ll see you later, okay?”
I nodded.
Before he got out of the car he faced me and said, “Kayla, there is something I haven’t told you.”
I felt as if my heart skipped a beat. “What is it?”
“Xavier is helping me research ways to turn me mortal again.”
“Oh.”
“I know that’d be a good thing for us, but I feel like I wouldn’t be able to protect you as much.”
“Hunter, I don’t care about the protection part. To an extent, I can protect myself more than most people can protect themselves. I just want to be able to have a normal life with you. A life where we’ll grow old together.”
He looked down at my ring and smiled.
I laughed. “Not that I’m thinking about the promises that the ring that shall remain unspoken of represents. I’m just saying.”
He leaned in and kissed me before he got out of the car and walked toward his house.

Back at home, mom and dad told us about how proud they were. I was sure they had a lot of questions, but they never asked anything about that world. I assumed they were told to make things as normal as possible for us and that was exactly what they were doing.
They got to know Kim by asking her about the things that she enjoyed. They talked about plans to get us back to schools and all normal human things. Only that wasn’t ‘my normal’ anymore. Everything felt insignificant. I loved seeing my parents, but I missed the fallen surrounding me. I missed my dagger, which was in my room but still… I had grown used to having it on me. I missed Hunter by my side, and oddly, I missed the constant danger.
I could see Ethan in the living room, watching me. Kim could see him too, but her focus was on laughing at mom’s jokes and getting to know them. She was fitting right in and I loved that, but I didn’t fit in anymore.
After dinner, I went to my room feeling more alone than I had ever felt. I stared outside of the window, missing the sight of the Academy’s surroundings.
I could feel Hunter’s arms around me before I could sense his presence. He stood behind me with his arms wrapped around me, and he reached for my hand, running his finger over my ring.
He whispered in my ear, “I meant every single promise that I made you. I’ll always be here for you.”

CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO
A look into the final Academy of the Fallen novel, ‘Forsaken’.
The Incubus
Humans and their routines… Of course it took me no time at all to escape from Daniels’ weak wards. I could have confronted him, but the idea of taking him days to find out that I bypassed his wards was quite entertaining.
They were so stupid to leave the two sisters together. It was so easy to find them. I could care less about the human girl. It was the nephilim I wanted. Taking the one nephilim, Samael, was good, but getting the girl too, was ever better. She was the key to me getting everything that I ever wanted: power, the academies, and even her mother for that matter.
It didn’t take long for Samael to agree to a deal where he would help me in exchange for my turning him all human. We watched them for a few days. So pathetic watching their human lives… They figured that the immortal’s presence along with the sisters’ wards around the house, were enough protection. And so, they dismissed their angel guardian so that he could be with his mate during the nights. Personally, that was one angel I’d love to watch take the fall. The chaos that would create was a demon’s dream-come-true.
The nephilim girl turned out to be stronger than I ever imagined, so I had to plan carefully. I never thought I would say this, but there was actually one thing that humans were good for and that was their medicine. While the sisters were at school, Samael used one of those medicines by adding it to the drinks, which I hoped would be used for their meal that evening.
My plan was flawless. The angel left to see his mate and Samael confirmed that the sisters excused themselves to go to sleep. Although they’d be able to sense me, Samael had ways to make sure that was minimized and that they couldn’t sense him at all.
As expected, the immortal made himself unseen as he approached the house and ended up in the nephilim’s room.
I must say that there was something that gave me more pleasure than taking the nephilim girl, and that was to watch the trapped immortal’s expression of pure horror as he helplessly watched me take her away.
